Samsung finally announced its first foldable phone
After many teasers and any rumours, Samsung finally unveiled, its fully foldable phone on Wednesday. The company kicked off the first day of its developers conference by showcasing a tablet-sized device that folds into a 4.3 inch display size phone. Samsung is calling this, its Infinity Flex Display, but the company was not to reveal too much about the device just yet. What we do know, however, is that Samsung's foldable phone is real and it will be ready for mass market in the coming months.
Samsung is yet not announced a name of this device so we only have rumours to go on that suggest this phone could be called the Galaxy F. During the presentation, Samsung hid the design of the device and dimmed the lights so all we could see is the display. And it is an impressive display to say the least as the company showed a 7.3-inch AMOLED panel that can fold down the middle, turning a tablet into a candybar phone. There is a secondary 4.6-inch AMOLED display on the outer cover that can be used as a phone.
The company says that the Infinity Flex Display is thinnest display ever and can be folded "hundreds of thousands of times." The device is manufacturer by considering to offer consumers a tablet and a smartphone in one single a
Npackage. In order to make the UI work both ways, Samsung also announced a new interface design called One UI. Samsung has worked closely with Google and Android developers to create a UI that is minimalistic, showing only relevant content on the bottom of the screen for easy one-handed use. When the device is unfolded into a tablet, the UI seamlessly makes the transition to adapt to a larger screen area. One UI will allow up to three apps to run simultaneously on the screen to give the user the freedom to multitask. Notably, One UI will also be coming to other Galaxy phones that get updated to Android 9 Pie.
Samsung may have unveiled the device to the world, but getting it into mass market will be a challenge. Mass manufacturing of the Infinity Flex Display will be difficult, especially considering the delicate nature of the display. The device does not get a glass protection on display, but rather an advanced layer of composite polymer that is flexible and durable. Other challenges include making sure the display remains intact after being folded thousands of times. It is also the thinnest display ever produced which also makes it all the more fragile. The company is yet to set an exact date for the launch of this foldable phone, but we expect to see this make its presence felt at CES 2019.
